Mix Of The Week: DJ Alex Old School Mixtape Volume 3

It’s been a while since I posted any Tune Of The Week or Mix Of The Week selections. Mostly it’s been because I’ve been busy with other things, but also because I haven’t found any real knockout mixes.

This mix from DJ Alex dropped me straight back in to the 90s RnB club scene, with tracks by Dr Dre, Usher, TLC, Aaliyah and Dru Hill. I can almost hear the swishing of the parachute pants…

Nicolas Jaar Live At The Boiler Room, NYC – Mix Of The Week

Since being introduced to the music of Nicolas Jaar some months back off the coast of Nicaragua, I’ve been listening to his releases fairly steadily.

Recently, he performed at a Reb Bull Music Academy party in New York City, where he laid down a live performance made up of (what sounds to be) all new material.

The set lasts about 47 minutes and is a bit of a slow starter, but once Mr. Jaar gets some momentum, it’s an absolute stomper.

Also, the entire time I was listening to this set, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like if James Blake had crashed the party…

This set made me homesick, missing the Cape Town music scene.

James Copeland – This Week’s Mix

Cape Town DJ James Copeland was featured on the Fresh Drive this afternoon (or morning for me) and he rocked it with some #electroswing. When I checked his Soundcloud page, I saw that he had done a set on the #ultimix last year as well, and it’s almost as good 🙂

Da Sunlounge South Africa mix for BPM Life Magazine

Da Sunlounge

It’s been nothing but music on the blog for the last couple of weeks and today, I don’t see any reason to change that up. After the Lawnchair Generals Spring mix, today I have an exclusive set from Da Sunlounge. Put together for BPM Life Magazine, the set is smooth all the way through. Filled with Jackin’ House, Chicago House and some Deep House for good measure, it’s well worth bookmarking this one.

This is a a semi-exclusive, as I got the link from Simon Newby himself (thank you!) so crank it up, listen up and enjoy.

Lawnchair Generals April 2011 Spring Mix – hold on to your hat

Pull up a chair son, we’re in for a helluva treat here. The ever awesome Lawnchair Generals have dropped another smoking mix and this one is heavy enough to break the floor boards. Get some big speakers or some serious headphones for this, because trust me you won’t wanna miss the bass on these tracks.
LCG Spring Mix 2011 by LawnChair Generals

I have no idea what any of the tracks are, and quite frankly I don’t care. All I want to do is crank this sucker up and push my down to the carpet on a nice twisty piece of mountain road…

If however, you have a tracklisting or know some of the tracks in the mix, be star and drop us a comment 😉

DJ Craze goes nuts with Traktor Scratch Pro 2. Proves he’s a muthaf*cking monster

I’m a huge Native Instruments fan boy, all the way from their VST instruments to their DJ kit. In the video below you can watch DJ Craze do his thing on the new Native Instruments Traktor Scratch Pro 2 system alongside the Native Instruments Mashine (which I’ve been drooling over). The performance proves (again) what’s possible when the old school and the new school of DJing collide.

It’s been a good week for DJ posts, so if you like what you see check these out too:

After yesterday’s post (Ean Golden’s Traktor S4 Routine) I was still in the mood for more controllerism and I stumbled across this video of Ean Golden getting down with the legendary DJ Qbert.

It’s a great mash up of old school DJ skills with the new scholl controller kids. Watch and enjoy

“Phenomena” DJ Routine on Traktor Kontrol S4 – Golden Oldie

After watching this video of Ean Golden doing his thing with Traktor Pro and the Kontrol S4, I was itching to get my ears on some, so here it is.

This routine is called Phenemena and while it may be short, it’s definitely sweet.

Hell Funkin Yeah – New Krafty Kuts mix

Krafty Kuts is one seriously fresh mo fo… After seeing him live a couple of times, I feel I’m qualified to let you know that this shit will have you hugging the ceiling in no time.  He’s dropped a (mostly) fresh new blend on his Soundcloud page, but I know how lazy you can be – which is why I’m towed it here for you. With some hip hop classics mushed with break beat wickedness, sandwhiched with some funk and  mixed with a soul joint or two or squeezed in to one juicy set, you’d better get a stiff drink and make some space before bumping this shizz too loudly.

Throwback – my cure for homesickness

I’ve been in Costa Rica for a  couple of weeks now, and I must admit – I’ve started to get a little home sick. The two things I really miss from back home are the food and the music. Costa Ricans aren’t big on soul music, and I’ve been jonesing to hear a little Marvin Gaye or a drop of Betty White. So, in an effort to feel a little more at home, I merged two of my favourite types of music – soul and house. The set is a throwback to some of my favourite old school tunes. While this may not be the most technically slick set I’ve ever put down (I have a small apartment and can’t make too much noise, so the mix is a little wobbly) it certainly did make me feel better, even if it does have a few warts.
