This week’s cover is technically more of a remix, but it was so artfully and respectfully handled, that I just has to post it.
Umami is comprised of German Duo of Sam and Robert who put together a cracking rework of Bobby Hebb’s beautful acoustic soul record ‘Sunny’ which ranks very highly on my list of all time feel-good pop songs.
Umami – Sunny
“Sunny” has been covered by everyone from Jamiroqui and Marvin Gaye to Frank Sinatra (even a surprisingly tender version by Leonard Nimoy aka Mr Spock), and I’ve posted some of my favourite versions down below the original.
It’s always great to hear a classic rework make its way to the dancefloor.
The Tune Of The Week segment of my blog really is one of my favourites. This week I was feeling a little disco when I went digging for some new music. The choice however, was an impossible one to make; so I didn’t make it.
First up is Dutch Rhythm Combo ft Joe Dukie (from Fat Freddy’s Drop) on a track calle Venom. The bass line, the strings, the choppy little guitar – they all do it for me on this Dr Rubberfunk Remix. I can practically feel my sideburns grow as I listen to this. Quality Tune
Dutch Rhythm Combo – Venom (Dr. Rubberfunk Club Mix)
The second Tune for this week is Jamiroquai’s “White Knuckle Ride.” The single is taken off their seventh album ‘Rock Dust Light Star’ (I blogged about it last week, you can listen to the whole album for free here). This video has Jay K’s fun vocal performance, a helicopter and a 1980’s Porsche Carrera doing silly things in the desert. I’m not sure there’s much more I could ask for.
Today’s Grooveshark playlist is by one of my favourite bands of all time – Jamiroquai. Rock Dust Light Star is their seventh studio album and continues in the disco/funk/dance vein that made their ealier works popular.
